Mick Cahill Memorial Cycle Race

2003

2004

2006

The total amount of racers was just under 100 (up from last years 70).  The riders had a strong tailwind along the Clonmeen Road but had this wind directly against them on the Main Mallow-Killarney Road.

The main bunch split into 3 separate groups on the first lap with David O’Loughlin, Richie Cahill and Vincent Gleeson amongst those in the first group.  On about lap 3 some of the second group started making there way to the front group including Timmy Barry and Paddy Moriarty.  There were a few attempts to break away but the front group remained relatively unchanged until 3 laps from home when Timmy Barry, Vincent Gleeson and Michael Dennehy got clear.  They were soon joined by Richie Cahill.  When they had opened up a lead of about 20 seconds they were joined by David O’Loughlin who rode very strongly to catch them.

Richie Cahill punctured on the second last lap and had to fight hard to get back on to lead group.  Michael Dennehy lost contact with the lead group but managed to stay within sight of them to the finish.

At the final corner all 4 in the leading group contested the sprint with David O’Loughlin just edging out Barry, Gleeson and Cahill.  Despite the strong winds the day stayed dry which led to some very fast racing particularly on the Clonmeen Road.

Primes on the day were won by Michael Dennehy, David O’Loughlin, Sean McIlroy and Barry Meade.
