Duhallow Angling and Leisure Group

Duhallow Angling and Leisure Group is a voluntary community based group set up with the prime aim of developing angling and leisure facilities on Duhallows rivers and lakes.    The group was initially set up in June of 1999 by members of local  communities from Banteer, Lyre, Kilcorney, Rathcoole and Aubane.

The group is at present made up of community members, landowners and other interested parties.    To date the group have developed and cleared sections of the Glen,Aubane and Rathcoole rivers providing easy access to the rivers and also providing picnic and walking facilities, namely at Fr. Murphys Bridge, Rathcoole Bridge, Glashatraka, Aubane, Donoure Falls and Moll Carthy's Bridge.

These facilities were developed under Phase 1, which was funded by IRD Duhallow Leader II, costing a total of over £100,000 including voluntary labour.

At present the group is made up of committee members who are mainly landowners plus the following Officers:

Chairman D. Howard
Assist Chairman P. Twomey
Secretary S. Riordan
Assis Sec Mark Leader
PRO D. Withers
Treasurer  John Twomey

The above  phase 1  facilities  have been completed  with no outstanding debt on the group.

The group has also  taken out its own  public liability insurance cover for fishermen, angling groups, and all related activities.

The main aim of the group is to continue to develop new river facilities and also maintain the existing developed facilities.

It is envisaged that the maintenance of existing development  will be maintained by summer students.

The development of coarse fishing such as at Banteer Pondfield is also a possibility.

The fishing and leisure facilities will also attract tourism into the area creating revenue for further fishing/leisure development and increased demand for local accommodation, bars etc.

Provision of more facilities will also encourage many young people to take up fishing as a hobby  and the provision of fishing lessons by Senior fisherman is also a possibility.

Alongside this, walking and picnic facilities for families will encourage all to get out and explore our rivers and appreciate the truly beautiful and natural resources we have on our doorsteps.
