Banteer, Lyre and
districts Community Council
The
village of Banteer is a small rural village located on the Kanturk/Cork route
and the population of the village and surrounding areas is approximately 800
people. The population has been steadily increasing over the
past number of years with a large number of young families now living in the
area.
Over
the past 2 and a half years the local Community Council have liased with Cork
County Council on the overall development plan for Banteer/Lyre
and surrounding areas.
Every six months there is a joint meeting with Cork County Council
Engineers Ger Buckley and Martin Corcoran re the overall development in the
area.
At these meetings all issues such as footpaths, roads, carparks,
landscaping, housing, water, sewage, lighting and other items are
discussed in detail and agreed.
Over
the past 20 years, Banteer Community have been to the forefront in local
development and this is evident from such projects as the building of a local
Community Centre in the l980’s
and more recently the opening of the Glen
Theatre,
which involved the refurbishment of an old school.
In 1994, a local community run Playschool was opened and this is
thriving, providing facilities for the young children of the area.
Banteer
and Lyre districts community Council have also, during 1997/98/99, installed up
to 60 social alarms for the local elderly people with the help of a Department
of Social Welfare Grant.
More
recently, in co-operation with Cork County Council, the village footpaths have
been renewed as well as landscaping of the village, provision of a carpark,
provision of local authority housing and the upgrading of sewage, water and
lighting systems.
For
the past 2 years, the Community Council, GAA and Sports Committee have been
working together on further development plans for the Sportsfield/Pondfield area
which includes the provision of further recreational facilities in the
Sportsfield and the provision of an amenity park in the existing Pondfield.
This project is now
near completion with
grant aid from the Department of Sports and IRD Duhallow (Leader 2)
