Farm
Assist
Farm Assist is
a weekly means-tested payment for low-income farmers. Farmers with income
from another source such as other self-employment or insurable employment
may still qualify. To qualify for farm assist you must be a
farmer, satisfy a means-test and be aged between 18 and 66. It is not
necessary for you to own the land you farm to be eligible. The payment
consists of a personal rate for yourself, with extra amounts for your
adult and child dependants, less your weekly means assessment. The means
test is based on gross income less any expenses incurred in earning that
income. If you think you may qualify, or are aware of a family who may
benefit from the scheme please contact your local Social Welfare Office
or Linda Deady at 029-60633.

A Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA) is
available from a range of different financial companies and is for anyone
between the ages of 18 and 75, whether working or not. This is a private
pension plan so it can be moved from job to job. The Pensions Board and
the Revenue Commissioners monitor all PRSAs.
Two types of PRSA are available:
standard where the charges are capped and
non standard where the charges are not restricted and therefore are more
expensive. You can pay as much as you wish into your PRSA, although you
may be influenced by the level of contribution that will qualify for
income tax relief. Payments are capped for tax relief purposes of between
15% and 30% of earnings. If your employer has arranged to give you access
to a PRSA, you can ask your employer to deduct your contributions from
your pay. Employers are obliged to
appoint a PRSA provider before 15th September 2003.
This will involve giving employees the opportunity to arrange their PRSAs,
making payroll deduction available, passing on the contributions within 21
days of the end of the month in which they were
deducted and
providing employees with regular information about their plans.
