Duhallow is organising Composting Demonstrations which will assist
householders/communities to initiate their own composting facilities with
a view to improving the environment and reducing the cost of pay-by-weight
charges. Demonstrations are free of charge and all are welcome.
Composting Demonstrations will be held at the following venues from
11am - 2pm on:

Tidy Town Workshops
These
workshops are for all community groups interested in enhancing the
appearance of their areas and harnessing the community spirit of their
area. Frank Donaldson of Donaldson Tourism & Heritage Consultancy will
hold a series of training workshops in association with IRD Duhallow. He
is a Tidy Towns Competition adjudicator.
Series 1:
This includes three workshops for those who did not enter the Tidy
Towns Competition in 2004.
The three workshops will be held
on:
Tue. 26th April at 8pm, Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel
Wed. 27th April at 8pm, the Community Centre, Rathmore
Wed 4th May at 8pm, James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket
The content of these workshops
includes background to the Tidy Towns Competition, the Three Year Plan,
insurance and what does the adjudicator look at?
Series 2: These workshops will be held in May for villages that entered
the competition in 2004. Details will
be in the May Newsletter. Workshops will take place on 10th,

Women’s
Health Conference
‘Is rurality a factor in determining women’s health?’

This
conference aims to increase women’s understanding of a community
development approach to women’s health and how important it is to respond
to women’s needs in a holistic woman-centred way. Guest speakers will
include: Dr. Joanna McMinn, National Women’s Council of Ireland and
Geraldine Luddy, Women’s Health Council. Admission is free and all are

Duhallow Lone Parent Support Network meets monthly in the James O’Keeffe

Launch of Sheehy Skeffington
Monument
The
Duhallow Women’s Forum will launch a monument to the Irish Suffragette,
Hanna Sheehy Skeffington on Friday 27th May at 4pm in
Kanturk Town Park. Ms. Kathy Sinnott MEP and Ms Micheline Sheehy
Skeffington will perform the launch. All are welcome. Light

Dyslexia Workshops for Primary School Pupils

Tuesday April 12th 2005, for 5 consecutive Tuesdays,

Duhallow Training Centre, Boherbue, 4-5pm
Organised by the IRD Duhallow Dyslexia Support Group, these workshops are
aimed at primary pupils with an assessment of dyslexia or specific
learning difficulty in reading. For further details, please contact

3rd Level Student
Support for Study and Exams
A Study Skills and Exam Techniques
Programme for third level students of Duhallow will take place in: The
James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket on Saturday 16th April
2005. This programme
will be facilitated by Counsellors from CIT and
is an initiative of the Millennium Education Fund Consortium, funded by
the National Development Plan under the Millennium Access Fund.
This workshop is free but registration is

IRD Duhallow –
Second Rural Social Scheme
IRD Duhallow is currently
recruiting for its 2nd Rural Social Scheme. The RSS offers meaningful
employment (19.5 hrs/week), the benefit of a Class A PRSI stamp and farmer
friendly part-time work for farm families. To be eligible to participate
in the RSS a farmer must be in receipt of Farm Assist, or have a herd
number and be in receipt of one of the following long-term social welfare
payments; Unemployment Assistance, Disability Assistance or Unemployment
Benefit. Participants currently employed on the CE scheme may also
transfer to RSS. Spouses of eligible families may participate. Please

farmers are under financial pressure, you or someone you know may be

Farmers Market
Each
Saturday from 10.30 to 12.30 the Duhallow Farmers Market takes place at
the indoor venue to the rear of Twohig’s Supervalu. New traders offering
a diverse range of organic fruit and vegetables, floral arrangements and
speciality cakes have joined. The Market also offers free range eggs,
broilers, organic lamb, honey, preserves, a selection of breads and fresh
cream products. Demand for locally produced vegetables still exceeds
supply. We are looking for more members to supply this niche market. If

Duhallow Beekeepers Association
The
association has a well-established brand name, “Duhallow Honey” and
commands a strong retail customer base in Duhallow. If you would like to
get involved in the production of honey, please contact the number below.
